Lake Weather Safety Tips

Check the Weather Forecast

Before You Go: Always check the weather forecast before heading out. Look for signs of storms, strong winds, or other adverse conditions.
During the Trip: Use a reliable weather app or a marine radio to keep updated on changing weather conditions.

Understand Wind Patterns

Wind Speeds: High winds can create rough waters, making boating challenging and dangerous. Generally, winds over 15 knots (17 mph) can make conditions unsafe.
Direction: Know how to navigate depending on wind direction. It’s often safer to travel into the wind when returning to shore.

Recognize Weather Signs

Dark Clouds: An indicator of an approaching storm.
Sudden Temperature Drops Often precede a storm.
Changing Winds: Can signal incoming weather changes.

Safety Equipment

Life Jackets: Ensure everyone on board wears a life jacket.
Emergency Kit: Include first-aid kit, flares, and a whistle.
Communication: Carry a fully charged mobile phone and a VHF radio.

Have an Emergency Plan

Route Plan: Inform someone on shore about your trip plan, including your expected return time.
Shelter Locations: Know the nearest safe harbors or sheltered areas where you can take cover if the weather turns bad.

Be Cautious of Fog

Visibility: Fog reduces visibility significantly. Use sound signals and proceed slowly.
Navigation: Use GPS and radar if available, and follow navigation buoys carefully.

Avoid Lightning

Lightning Risk: Boating during a thunderstorm is extremely dangerous due to lightning strikes.
Seek Shelter: If you see lightning or hear thunder, immediately head to the nearest safe shore.

Water Temperature Awareness

Cold Water: Even if the air temperature is warm, falling into cold water can lead to hypothermia.
Dressing Appropriately: Wear appropriate clothing and have dry clothes on board.

Sun Protection

Sunburn: Protect yourself from UV rays with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.
Hydration: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Night Boating Precautions

Lights: Ensure your boat is equipped with proper navigation lights.
Visibility: Reduce speed and be extra vigilant about other boats and obstacles.
